Jotagá Crema räägib, kuidas sündis Netflixi sari “3%”

(Interview with Jotagá Crema in English below)

Me hakkasime “3%” arendama aastal 2009, kui me olime tudengid São Paulo Ülikoolis. Me võitsime pilootosaga auhinna, aga me ei võitnud võimalust tervet hooaega sarja valmis teha.

Tavaliselt töötasime me pool päeva koos writers’ room’is.

Konkurents on karm.

Kas sul on mingeid häid kirjutamisharjumusi?

Praktiseeri. Uuri. Ole kannatlik. Ela.

IN ENGLISH

Drakadeemia is happy to present our first English language courses in 2021. This gives us an opportunity to discover the work, and to gain insight into how writing is practiced and writing is taught elsewhere. The first course this year is titled “TV Series Development and Pitching Workshop”, that is led by Lucas Abrahão (a Brazilian screenwriter and screenwriting tutor) and Jotagá Crema (a Brazilian director and screenwriter).

Jotagá was one of the writers and directors for the Netflix series “3%”. 3% was Netflix’s most watched non-English language series in 2016, deriving over half of its audience from outside of Brazil, and went on to become a landmark in streaming platforms’ production of original content worldwide.

We wanted to introduce Jotagá to you, and asked him some questions.

When you started creating “3%” series, was it clear from the start that it’ll go on Netflix?

We developed “3%” in 2009 when we were in college at University of São Paulo. Pedro Aguilera had the idea of the concept bases on “1984” and “Brave New World” and Daina Ginnecchini, Dani Libardi and I developed the project. We didn’t know about Netflix at the time and it didn’t exist in Brazil and we inscribed the project in governmental series concourse. We won the pilot prize but didn’t win to make a season.

We started a campaign on YouTube, blogs and social networks to make 3% possible. We negotiated with lots of channels in Brazil but we couldn’t have the budget to make a series of such scope. We took approximately five year so negotiate and make the project with the production company Boutique Films and Netflix.

Did you start writing the series from creating the world of the story, or from the characters?

We developed the series from the main concept of a completely meritocratic world divided in two where only 3% were selected to the “good side” that would be called “Maralto” in the Netflix series. After that strong concept and theme we created characters and developed the complex world of “3%”

The series has 12 writers in total. On which processes did you work together, on which processes individually?

We usually worked together in the writers rooms that took half a day. In the writers rooms we deepened characters, themes, conflicts and the complexities of the world. Then we would think about the character’s arches and the structures of the episodes. Normally the writers room would have four to six people.

The writers would write alone the treatments of the episodes and later the screenplays. Everything supervised by Boutique and Netflix.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m teaching classes (like this one in Estonia!), developing new genre series projects (action, horror and sci-fi) and working as a consultant and script doctor.

What would be your advice for someone who has an idea for a series, and who wants to develop it into something with potential international interest?

My advice is simple: be authorial and be true to your country’s and your background’s culture.

A series normally is a commercial endeavor with lots of opinions of the producing company and the channel but the seed of it is authorial and it must have heart and soul.

Nowadays in the streaming platforms we have access to series and movies from all over the world. It’s a fierce competition. If you make something generically universal you will hardly compete because you don’t have the budget or the tradition in the series format like the Americans or the British. But when you explore your authorial and the unique culture you’re immersed you’ll have an unique and original voice that no budget or tradition can compete.

Do you have any good writing habits?

If want to write well you have practice writing and you have to live, you have to see the word. Be open to understand people from different cultures, races, classes and backgrounds than you.

And to write well and be discovered it may take year, maybe more than a decade. So get used to the frustration of working a lot with slow results and get used to hear lots and lots of nos.

Practice. Study. Be patient. Live.
